When Lumar reaches a URL only by following a redirect, the Found In column now shows a redirect icon after the source icons. You can see straight away how Lumar found the URL, instead of a row of greyed-out icons that looks like missing data.
What is Found in Redirects?
Every URL Lumar finds through a source, such as the web crawl, sitemaps, backlinks, URL list, Google Analytics or log files, carries that source in the Found In column. When one of those URLs redirects, Lumar records the destination as its own row. The destination was never supplied by a source, so it has no Found In source of its own: the source stays on the URL that redirected.
Previously, all the source icons on these redirect targets showed greyed out. Lumar now adds a redirect icon after the source icons, set slightly apart from them because a redirect is not a source. Hovering the icon shows the URL that redirected here and where Lumar found that URL, with a link to that URL's detail page. URLs that have a source of their own look the same as before.
Why it matters
- No more unexplained URLs. A URL with no source looks like a data error. The only way to explain it used to be adding the Redirects In Count column, which Broken Pages (4xx Errors) does not show by default, and reading it against Found At URL.
- Find 404s your own redirects created. On Broken Pages (4xx Errors), the redirect icon separates 404s reached through a redirect on your site, such as trailing-slash or lowercase redirects, from URLs with a real discovery gap.
- Spot gaps in log coverage. On Pages not in Log Summary, the icon shows that bots are still requesting an old URL and being redirected.
How to explain a URL with no source
- Open a report that shows the Found In column, such as Broken Pages (4xx Errors).
- Find a URL whose source icons are all greyed out.
- Look for the redirect icon after the source icons. It means Lumar reached the URL through a redirect, rather than losing its source.
How to trace a broken page back to the redirect that created it
- Hover the redirect icon in the Found In column.
- Read which URL redirected here and where Lumar found that URL.
- Click the link to open that URL's detail page. You'll see that it carries the Found In source and redirects to the broken page.
How to separate redirect-created 404s from the rest
- Open Broken Pages (4xx Errors).
- Scan the Found In column.
- Rows with the redirect icon point back at a redirect on your site. Rows without it either have a source of their own or have a genuine discovery gap worth investigating.
How to read a gap in log coverage
- In a project whose only source is a log file integration, open Pages not in Log Summary.
- Find a URL with the redirect icon.
- Hover the icon to see the old URL that bots are still requesting.
